This 1792 view shows Washington while it was still largely on paper, a planned capital carved from farmland and woods along the Potomac. The city had been laid out under Pierre Charles L'Enfant and surveyed by Andrew Ellicott, and in 1792 the new federal city was little more than scattered construction sites and open ground. The same year, work began on the President's House, and the Capitol's cornerstone followed in 1793. Viewers today will notice how the image mixes the ambitious grid of avenues with the sparse reality of the landscape it was meant to transform.
