A bird's-eye view drawn in 1916 sets this print apart from the many photographs of the Capitol on the gallery board, since it shows the whole city laid out from above rather than a single building. Artist H.H. Green created the color panorama for the B.S. Reynolds Company, and it was printed by the Matthews Northrup Works in Buffalo, New York. Pictorial city views like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when railroads and civic boosters used them to show growing cities in precise detail. The Capitol, the White House, and the broad avenues of the planned city appear together, which makes the print a useful record of Washington as it looked just before the First World War.
