The Capitol dome and the long green sweep of the National Mall are the centerpiece here, seen from above at a height few viewers of 1925 would have experienced. Aerial photography was still a young craft then, and images like this one captured the city's monumental axis in a way ground-level views could not: the Capitol at the eastern end, the Washington Monument and the reflecting land between them. Pictures of this kind were widely reproduced to show the nation's capital as a planned, orderly city, and they remain useful for comparing how the Mall's buildings and open spaces were laid out nearly a century ago.
