An aerial view of the Capitol's East Front, with a large crowd massed across its grounds, records the swearing-in of Franklin Delano Roosevelt on March 4, 1933. Roosevelt took office during the depths of the Great Depression, when banks were closing across the country, and his inaugural address that day famously told Americans that "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Photographs taken from above like this one were still relatively new for capturing public ceremonies, and they show how the Capitol's broad plaza became the stage for national moments. The picture is held in the Architect of the Capitol's collection.
