The long, narrow format of this gelatin silver print, nearly 45 inches wide, lets it capture the whole east front of the Capitol on March 4, 1921, when Warren G. Harding took the oath of office as the 29th president. Harding, a Republican, had won a landslide over Democrat James Cox in 1920 on a promise of "normalcy" after the First World War and the Wilson years. The studio of Harris & Ewing, a Washington firm known for documenting official Washington, made the image, and the wide view shows how many people gathered on the grounds to witness the transfer of power.
