Looking outward from the President's House, this hand-colored lithograph gives a view across the young federal capital in 1848. The print came from New York, where Nathaniel Currier's shop produced inexpensive lithographs of American cities and events for a broad public, and the hand coloring was a common finish that gave such prints a lively, painted look. The city was still taking shape: the Capitol was being enlarged, and the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid that summer, so the scene captures a capital still in progress.
