Few pictures from the week of President William McKinley's death show Theodore Roosevelt so plainly in grief: here he stands beside the casket as McKinley's body lies in state in Buffalo's City Hall. McKinley had been shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6, 1901, and died eight days later, on September 14. Roosevelt took the oath of office that same day, and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly ran T. Dart Walker's view of the scene on its cover on September 28, 1901. The halftone process, which let magazines reproduce photographs directly on the printed page, is part of what makes the image worth a closer look.
