McKinley and Roosevelt appear together on this campaign poster, which pairs the Republican presidential nominee with the running mate who would later take over the office. Posters like this were a staple of the 1900 contest, when McKinley sought a second term and Roosevelt, then governor of New York, was chosen as his vice presidential candidate. The ticket was a deliberate attempt to draw on Roosevelt's popularity after his Spanish-American War service with the Rough Riders. Worth noticing is how the printed slogan puts the two names side by side, a format that made the ticket easy to recognize at a glance. McKinley's assassination in September 1901 soon made Roosevelt the nation's president.
