This campaign piece pairs Theodore Roosevelt and Charles W. Fairbanks as the Republican ticket, a combination that carried the 1904 presidential election. Roosevelt had taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley and was running in his own right, while Fairbanks, a senator from Indiana, was chosen to balance the ticket. The printed title names both men in the typeface and style common to campaign materials of the era, which were widely circulated as pamphlets, posters and buttons. Such pieces show how the party presented its candidates to voters at a time when the presidency was still closely tied to party machinery.
