A color lithograph published in New York by Haasis & Lubrecht presents the 1880 Republican ticket as a matched pair: Gen. James A. Garfield for president and Gen. Chester A. Arthur for vice president. Campaign portraits like this one introduced candidates to voters who might never see them in person, and they were often displayed in shops and homes during the contest. Garfield, an Ohio congressman and Civil War general, narrowly defeated Democrat Winfield Scott Hancock that November. Arthur, a New York politician whose nomination helped balance the ticket, became president after Garfield was shot in 1881 and died that September.
