Printed on cotton rather than paper, this campaign piece was meant to be hung or carried as a banner, not folded into a pocket. It announces the Republican ticket in large capitals: Abraham Lincoln for president and Hannibal Hamlin for vice president. The Republicans nominated the pair at their Chicago convention in May 1860, and the fall election turned on sharp sectional divisions over slavery in the territories. Copyrighted by H. C. Howard of Philadelphia and deposited that June, the color piece shows how much effort went into political display during that campaign.
