The Working-Man's Banner was made for the Republican ticket of Ulysses S. Grant and Henry Wilson, who ran for president and vice-president in 1872. Grant, the Union general who had led the Army to victory in the Civil War, was seeking a second term, while Wilson, a Massachusetts senator, had risen from a shoemaker's apprenticeship to national office, a background that made him an appealing running mate to laboring voters. Banners like this one were carried in torchlight parades and hung over streets and public halls, turning election season into a public spectacle. The printed text did the persuading, since its slogan had to be read quickly by crowds passing at a distance.
