Printed in gray-olive and black, this lithograph carries the slogan "The Union must and shall be preserved" above the names of Abraham Lincoln of Illinois and Hannibal Hamlin of Maine, the Republican ticket of 1860. Philadelphia printer William H. Rease issued it as a campaign banner, a common form of election decoration, and he made a similar design for the Bell-Everett ticket of the Constitutional Union party. The Library's impressions of both were deposited for copyright on June 21, 1860, and the banner is tagged as portraying labor and trades, a theme that reflects the Republican effort to appeal to working voters.
