Taft and Sherman, the Republican ticket of 1908, are the particular pair this picture puts side by side, with Taft at the top as the presidential nominee and Sherman as his running mate for vice president. Taft had been Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt, who had chosen him as his successor, and the Republicans carried the election comfortably that November. Sherman, a congressman from upstate New York, was an early example of a running mate picked to balance the ticket geographically and politically. Look at the image for the formal portrait conventions of the era, which were typical of campaign material of the time.
