William Howard Taft ran for president in 1908 with the backing of the retiring Theodore Roosevelt, and this campaign poster carries the "Good Times" slogan that his supporters used to argue that prosperity would continue under a Republican administration. Political posters of this period were printed in large runs and pasted on fences, storefronts and barns, so they were built to be read quickly from a distance. Taft went on to defeat William Jennings Bryan that November, and the poster's bold lettering and direct message show how campaigns of the era sold a candidate on confidence and stability.
