This campaign poster promotes the Socialist Party ticket of Eugene V. Debs for president and Benjamin Hanford for vice president in 1904, the same election that returned Theodore Roosevelt to the White House. Debs, a former leader of the American Railway Union, ran for president several times, and in 1904 the party drew a few hundred thousand votes, a small share next to the major-party totals. The poster shows how Socialists sought to reach working-class voters during the Roosevelt years, when labor conflict and trust-busting were central national debates.
