Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, appears here in a bust portrait set within a decorative frame, a format favored by studio photographers of the early 1900s. She was born in 1884, so this portrait dates from around 1902, when she was a teenager and her father had only recently entered the White House after the assassination of William McKinley. Her lively, headline-making presence in Washington soon made her one of the most photographed young women in the country. The print offers a glimpse of how portrait studios presented the president's daughter to the public at the very start of her celebrated years in the capital.
