Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt from his first marriage, is shown here at the wheel of an automobile with a companion beside her, a scene dated to about 1909. That year her father left the White House, and Alice, then in her early twenties, was already known for her high spirits and her willingness to flout the conventions of Washington society. Early motoring was still a novelty for women, and photographs like this one show how quickly the car became a symbol of independence for the young set of the period. Alice would later marry Nicholas Longworth, a Republican congressman who became Speaker of the House.
