Alice Roosevelt, the eldest daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, sits full-length on horseback in this photograph taken around 1905, when she was a young woman in the White House years. Horseback riding was a favorite pastime of hers, and she was often photographed on horses in the press of the day, which made her one of the most recognizable young women in the country. Her lively, unconventional public image, which later earned her the nickname "Princess Alice," makes portraits like this one a useful window into how the Roosevelt family presented itself to the public.
