Standing three-quarters length with one hand on her hip, the young Alice Roosevelt looks directly at the camera in a long coat and hat, a pose that suited her well-known independent streak. She was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, and her high-spirited behavior during his White House years made her a favorite subject of newspapers. The portrait was made around 1902 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent photographers of the Roosevelt era, who was trusted with many official and family portraits.
