Alice Roosevelt, born in 1884, was the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, who died two days after giving birth. This print is a c1902 portrait of her as a teenager, dated to early January, when she was living in the White House during her father's presidency, which began in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination. Alice became famous for her high spirits and sharp wit, and she was widely covered by the press, making her one of the most photographed young women of her day. The record notes that its date and details come from an old caption card and are unverified, so the exact sitting is best read as approximate.
