Alice Roosevelt, born in 1884, was the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, and she became one of the most famous young women in America while her father was in the White House. This portrait, dated to about 1902, shows her as a teenager, the period when newspapers began following her every move and she earned the nickname "Princess Alice." The photograph was made by B.M. Clinedinst, a Washington, D.C. studio photographer known for society portraits, and its copyright credit points to the commercial trade in such images. Note that the catalog date is approximate and the record is based on an older caption card.
