Alice Roosevelt, the elder daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a famous presence in Washington from her teenage years onward, and this portrait dates to about 1904, when she was in her early twenties and the White House was her family's home. Her father's administration gave her a public profile that the press followed closely, and she became known for her wit and independence, traits that later earned her the remark attributed to her that if she could not say something nice, she would sit beside Mrs. Longworth. Her image from this period shows the sort of celebrity that surrounded the Roosevelt children. The record for this print is thin, so its exact occasion is unconfirmed.
