Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the eldest daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, is the subject of this 1929 portrait, one of many studio sittings she gave over her long public life. Born in 1884 to Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, she became famous in Washington as a young woman, earning a reputation for wit and independence that made her a fixture of the capital's social and political circles. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, the Washington studio that photographed many officials and society figures of the era and copyrighted its work with the U.S. Copyright Office. Her wry, outspoken persona makes such portraits worth studying as records of how a prominent family presented itself to the public.
