Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, is the sitter in this portrait, which the Washington studio Harris & Ewing copyrighted and dated around July 12, 1918. Born in 1884, she spent her girlhood in the White House and was a well-known figure in Washington society by the late 1910s, admired for her wit and her willingness to flout convention. The caption card links the picture to Girl Scouts and wartime war bond campaigns, but the record marks these details as unverified, so they are best read as tentative.
