Alice Roosevelt, the eldest child of Theodore Roosevelt by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, was a young woman of eighteen when this portrait was made in 1902, the year her father became President. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of the era, took many portraits of the Roosevelt family during those years, and her work captures the attention the press and public gave the new First Daughter. Alice soon became famous for her high spirits and independent manner, and her youthful presence in the White House helped make the family a subject of intense public interest.
