Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee, was a young woman of great public curiosity during the years this portrait is dated to, roughly 1890 to 1910, when her father was rising through New York politics and then the presidency. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most accomplished women photographers of the period, made many portraits of the Roosevelt family and its circle, and this print belongs to that body of work. Alice became famous for her high spirits and her defiance of social convention, qualities the press loved to report, so the portrait is worth reading as an early record of her public image.
