Dated 1906, the year of her wedding, this portrait shows Alice Roosevelt, daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, who married Nicholas Longworth that February in a White House ceremony that drew wide press attention. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading photographer of the period who made many pictures of the Roosevelt family, took the picture, and its catalog card is tagged with marriage, weddings and clothing, suggesting the bridal attire was part of the interest. Alice became known for her outspoken, fashionable style and a prominent place in Washington society in later decades, so the image shows her as a young bride at the start of that public life.
