Few of the White House's outdoor gatherings were recorded as stereographs, which makes this c1905 view of a lawn party on the grounds unusual. Stereo cards like this one, copyrighted by Underwood & Underwood, were sold by the thousands to households that viewed them through hand-held stereoscopes, so the scene reached people far from Washington as a kind of three-dimensional visit. Theodore Roosevelt was in his first full term during these years, and the White House lawns hosted receptions, family gatherings and garden parties that drew guests from official and social circles. The record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact occasion and the names of those pictured remain uncertain.
