Theodore Roosevelt is shown passing through the Panama Canal Zone in 1906, during a trip that was unusual for a sitting president: he became the first to leave the United States while in office. By then the Canal Zone was a strip under American control, and an American construction effort that began in 1904 had taken over the work the French had abandoned. The photographer is credited as Fishbaugh, but the caption information is old and unverified, so details of the scene are worth checking against other sources.
