Few photographs from the Casablanca Conference show Franklin D. Roosevelt with a French commander as clearly as this one does. General Henri Giraud, who led French forces in North Africa, is among the figures pictured from the January 1943 meeting in Morocco. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill used the conference to plan the next stages of the war against Germany and Italy, and it produced the demand for unconditional surrender. Army Signal Corps photographers documented the visit, and images like this one presented the Allied leaders as united at a hard point in the fighting.
