Standing up in an open automobile at Rio Piedras, then a town just outside San Juan, Theodore Roosevelt appears during his 1906 visit to Puerto Rico, which made him the first sitting president to visit the island. The photograph was copyrighted by the Waldrop Photographic Co. of San Juan, a local studio working in the early 1900s. Automobiles were still a novelty on the island then, so the scene also hints at how new forms of travel were beginning to change everyday life there. The record dates the image only to about 1906, so the exact day it was taken is uncertain.
