This picture places escape artist Harry Houdini beside former president Theodore Roosevelt on what the record tentatively identifies as the S.S. Imperator, a ship whose name carries a question mark in the catalog. The Imperator, a Hamburg America Line liner that entered service in 1913, was among the largest passenger ships afloat, so the setting points to a transatlantic crossing. Roosevelt had left the presidency in 1909 but remained a celebrated public figure, and Houdini was one of the best-known performers in the world, which made their pairing a natural subject for photographers.
