Roosevelt and Capt. Fitzhugh are shown mid-leap over a fence, a moment of rider and horse in motion that departs from the stiff formal portraits of the period. The picture was taken around 1907, when Roosevelt was in the middle of his presidency and widely known for his vigorous outdoor life, including long rides. It was made by the Washington, D.C., photographer B.M. Clinedinst, who produced many images of the president and his circle and registered this one for copyright, which is why it survives with a number in the Copyright Office record.
