Theodore Roosevelt stands among members of the U.S. Olympic team in this photograph, which is dated to around September 5, 1908. That was during the fourth modern Olympic Games, held in London, to which the American athletes had been sent. Roosevelt, in the final stretch of his presidency, was a prominent advocate of vigorous outdoor life and athletic competition, so a group portrait with the team fits his public interest in sport. The record does not identify the individual athletes, so the men in the picture remain unnamed.
