Theodore Roosevelt stands at full three-quarter length beside a dead elephant, a rifle in hand, in a picture that captures the hunting trips he made in Africa after leaving the presidency. The record notes the setting as "probably in Africa," so the exact location is uncertain, but the image belongs to a body of lantern slides made for public lectures and illustrated talks in the years around 1909 to 1919. Roosevelt's safari, which he led in 1909 and 1910, drew wide newspaper attention and produced a flood of such photographs. The slide was made as a lantern projection, a format that let audiences see large, sharp images of distant places.
