Roosevelt is shown here among a group of thirteen men standing on railroad tracks in front of a locomotive, a setting that reflects how much of his presidency was spent traveling by rail to speak with crowds across the country. The stereograph format, with its paired images viewed through a stereoscope, was a popular way to bring such travel scenes into parlors in the early twentieth century. Roosevelt, who served as president from 1901 to 1909, was an enthusiastic promoter of his own public image, and photographs like this one helped present him as an active, approachable leader.
