Theodore Roosevelt is shown addressing a crowd in Grand Island, Nebraska, a rail-town stop where a president could reach a large audience from a temporary platform. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood of New York around 1903, when Roosevelt was in his second year as president after taking office following William McKinley's assassination. Stereographs like this were sold in large numbers and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave flat photographs a sense of depth and made distant public events feel close to home. The card is a useful record of how presidential travel and public speaking were documented in the early twentieth century.
