Few portraits pair a former president with a labor leader, but this one does. Theodore Roosevelt and John Mitchell, president of the United Mine Workers of America, are posed with clergyman Rev. M.J. Hoben in front of a porch, around 1910. The two men had met under far more tense conditions in 1902, when Mitchell led the anthracite coal strike in Pennsylvania and Roosevelt intervened to bring miners and operators before an arbitration commission. By the time this photograph was made, Roosevelt had been out of the White House for only a short time, and the group's relaxed arrangement suggests a meeting more cordial than the earlier dispute.
