Here Theodore Roosevelt stands on a table in an open-air setting, hands resting at his waist, addressing a ring of men seated around him. The photograph was made by Smith Art Photography of Freeport, Illinois, a studio whose work survives in the Library of Congress, and its undated record places it sometime between 1885 and 1919. That span covers much of Roosevelt's rise from New York legislator to governor, vice president and president, and his barnstorming campaign speeches drew crowds across the country. The picture captures the informal, direct style of platform oratory that made him one of the most recognizable public speakers of his era.
