Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 trip to the Grand Canyon is the context here, though this print is dated only to about 1911, which makes that date worth a second look. The party is shown riding down Bright Angel Trail, the switchbacking path that drops from the South Rim to the Colorado River, where mule and horseback travel was the standard way in. Roosevelt, who had left the presidency in 1909, was an enthusiastic traveler and hunter, and the Grand Canyon was among the western landscapes he sought out. Note the narrow ledge and steep drop, which explain why the trail was known for its exposure.
