Theodore Roosevelt in the uniform of a volunteer colonel marks the period when he led the Rough Riders, the volunteer cavalry regiment he helped raise for the Spanish-American War in 1898. The "U.S.V." in the title stands for United States Volunteers, the category of wartime troops that was distinct from the regular army. Roosevelt's leadership at San Juan Hill, in Cuba that July, made him a national figure, and his military bearing in portraits like this one helped carry that reputation into his later political career, including his presidency beginning in 1901.
