Dated May 19, 1914, this glass negative shows Theodore Roosevelt, the former president, a few weeks after he returned from his expedition to the Brazilian interior, the journey that mapped the River of Doubt. Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers with news photographs, made the negative, so it likely served a press need of the time. Roosevelt was then out of office and still a major national figure after his 1912 Progressive campaign, which kept his face in the papers. The sitter's name comes from the caption cards, which the collection describes as unverified.
