Theodore Roosevelt is shown leaving New York aboard the S.S. Vandyck, with the departure date of October 4, 1913 given in the caption. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, recorded the scene on a glass negative, and the date and title come from its unverified caption data. Roosevelt, a former president, was sailing to South America that autumn for a lecture tour and the expedition into Brazil's interior that became known as the River of Doubt journey. Pictures of his departures drew large crowds of reporters and well-wishers, which made the dockside setting a common subject for news photographers of the period.
