This picture shows Theodore Roosevelt, identified in the title as "Col." Roosevelt, aboard the steamship Vandyck, a liner of the Lamport & Holt line that sailed between New York and South America. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency, made the glass negative, and its photographers recorded many public figures arriving at and departing from New York piers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from the agency's own unverified caption, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Roosevelt's travels after he left the presidency drew wide press attention, which makes such shipboard views useful for tracing his movements.
