Here we have a glass negative captioned "Col. Theo. Roosevelt," the form of address used for Theodore Roosevelt after his service as colonel of the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency, produced and distributed news photographs in the early twentieth century, and this negative belongs to George Grantham Bain's collection at the Library of Congress. The record gives no exact date, so the sitting itself is uncertain, but the title places the image in the years when Roosevelt was a nationally famous figure before he entered the White House in 1901.
