Here Roosevelt is shown choosing who will ride next over a line of hurdles, a small scene of the riding parties he often led near Washington. The picture was made around 1907 by B. M. Clinedinst, a Washington artist who portrayed the president and his circle. Roosevelt was an accomplished horseman from his years on his ranch in the Dakota Territory and his service with the Rough Riders, and he kept up hard riding and outdoor exercise during his presidency. The image captures the informal, sporting side of White House life in the Progressive Era.
