A group of visitors gathers around Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Chittenden Bridge in Yellowstone National Park, a crossing named for Hiram M. Chittenden, the Army engineer who built many of the park's early roads. The photograph was made around 1937 by Haynes, Inc., the Yellowstone studio that for decades sold views of the park's roads, geysers and wildlife to tourists. Its notes record a copyright registration, which was standard for commercial views of this kind. The picture is a useful record of how presidential travel and national park tourism overlapped in the late 1930s.
