Theodore Roosevelt is shown saluting from the bridge of the liner Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, the ship that carried him back to Europe after his return from Africa in June 1910. The photograph was taken by Bain News Service, a New York agency whose pictures of public figures and news events were widely distributed to newspapers. Roosevelt had left the presidency in 1909, and this trip drew enormous crowds and press attention, so the image captures a former president being greeted as a celebrity on the Atlantic crossing. Its origin in the George Grantham Bain Collection makes it a useful record of how the press covered him during that period.
