A rocky railway cut, shown here as a wide panoramic view, is a trench blasted through solid stone so that a track could run level across hilly or mountainous ground. Crews of the late 1800s and early 1900s cut these passages by hand and with dynamite, and the raw rock faces often reveal the layers and drill marks of that labor. The record files this picture under Theodore Roosevelt's presidency from 1901 to 1909, a period of rapid railroad expansion across the country, but it does not name him or place him in the scene. Its value lies mainly in documenting the engineering and landscape of the rail age.
